A BRIGHT DARKNESS

01-blog-04

It is already night-time, everything is silent, and only the olive trees remain beneath our bright flight. We synchronise our lights and head out into nature, accompanying with our glow the only light left outside: the imposing light of the moon. We emerge when the sun goes down because we are nocturnal, and that way we can fly freely across the wide meadows.

We arrived at Luz de Alba Estate some time ago. It is hard to find a suitable place for us. We decided to stay here because it is a natural setting, surrounded by trees, rivers and lakes—ideal for our survival, as our habitat is mainly humid. During the day we stay beneath tree bark and in marshy areas. We need nature’s greenery to spread our wings and shine wherever we go. We love this place because it is 100% organic, and it shows. Here we are safe from everything. We are not afraid to roam freely in the La Mancha night. We need oxygen to shine, and we can assure you that here it is pure.

The people who live on this estate stay awake to admire the light that turns on beneath our abdomen. We glow in the dark and leave humans open-mouthed. Science says we glow because we have light organs under our abdomen, and that when we absorb oxygen mixed with our cells, a substance called luciferin is created, and so we light up without the need for heat. What they do not know is that we use that light to find a suitable mate. If we like the flashes they make, we repeat them so they know they are to our liking. But do not tell anyone—it is our
secret 😉

Life at Luz de Alba Estate is curious. They produce a liquid substance that shines like we do. Humans call it oil and, from what we have heard, it is a most delicious food. It comes from the olive trees on the estate itself, and its cultivation, care and production are entirely organic. It is a pity that we only eat snails, larvae and slugs…

Have I told you yet that we are called fireflies? Remember us when you come to Luz de Alba Estate. On more than one night you will see us fluttering and glowing like little lanterns. We will be waiting for you in this place in La Mancha, whose name we cannot remember either—but surely you can.
